Shaffer earns third straight UNOH All Star title |
LIMA, OH (Jan. 22, 2012) By Brian Liskai – Aliquippa, Pennsylvania’s Tim Shaffer was crowned the champion of the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series during a gala banquet Sunday at the UNOH Events Center. It was the third straight All Star title for “The Steel City Outlaw.” UNOH All Stars Guy Webb announced the series’ regionalization concept introduced in 2011 was a big success. The series had four separate point funds – the Ohio Region, Eastern Region, Great Plains Region and National – and sanctioned 37 races in 2011. “We were able to attract more cars to more All Star events which was great for the fans and tracks and put more money into the hands of the teams. We have added $27,000 in point fund money this year due to the regional concept,” said Webb. Shaffer’s 10 All Star victories in 2011 led the way to his championship in the National, Ohio Region and Great Plains Region and finished fourth in the Eastern Region. Shaffer’s team owners Janet Holbrook and Aaron Call accepted the hardware on his behalf as Shaffer is racing in Australia. “We have to thank the members of the team during 2011…Brian Kemenah, James, Five-O…there were many who helped out throughout the year. It’s been unbelievable what we have been able to achieve. And, we’re ready to defend our titles in 2012. We are ready to have some fun this year,” said Holbrook. “We have to thank Paul Kistler and Kistler Engines and Racing Products, J&J Race Cars, VRP Shocks and everyone who has contributed to our success. And Tim Shaffer? What can I say; he has proven he is one of the best drivers in the world.” Since teaming up with the C&H Motorsports team, Shaffer has compiled 38 All Star wins since 2008 and now has 45 career victories in the series to sit sixth on the all-time win list. Three-time All Star champion Dale Blaney finished second to Shaffer in the National, Ohio Region and Great Plains Region points and third in the Eastern Region and ended 2011 with eight series wins. Blaney has scored 30 All Star wins since 2007 and now has 84 career victories with the series to sit second on the all-time win list behind Kenny Jacobs 98 career wins. “We were good this year, but the 83 team was better. Tim is a good friend and a hell of a race car driver. He paid his dues on the road all those years and now it’s paying off. That team has set the bar pretty high and we all have to work hard to get to that level,” said Blaney. “George (Fisher, car owner and mechanic) and I have been together a long time now which is pretty remarkable in today’s racing environment. That speaks a lot about our friendship.” Fisher was named the UNOH All Star’s Crew Chief of the Year as well. “We had a good year. Dale and I communicate very well…we are like brothers. I would like to thank Ti-22 for all their help and support. We will be back stronger in 2012 and hopefully get more wins,” said Fisher. Fayetteville, Pennsylvania’s Lance Dewease was on hand to collect his title as the All Star’s Eastern Region champion. Dewease, who scored two series’ wins in 2011 to take his career total to 29, is recovering from neck and back surgeries from injuries he suffered in a late season crash. “This Eastern Region deal was tough. Not only did we have to compete against Shaffer and Blaney, but Daryn Pittman was hot this past year (3 All Star wins) and throw in Stevie Smith, Fred Rahmer and all the Posse drivers…it’s doesn’t get much tougher,” said Dewease. “We are in rehab and will continue to get better every day. Just to be able to walk into this banquet is a success. We will continue to work hard on healing and probably won’t be back out until April.” Pete Miller III of Port Vue, Pa., was named the UNOH All Star’s Rookie of the Year for 2011. He finished fifth in the National points, ninth in the Ohio Region, seventh in the Great Plains Region and 10th in the Eastern Region. “I have to thank my mom and dad and every one of the teams in this room. They all helped me so much and I learned more than could have ever imagined. I got to race on many new tracks and look forward to going back in 2012,” said Miller. Other drivers attending the banquet were 2010 All Star Rookie of the Year Cap Henry, who finished fourth in the National points, eighth in the Ohio Region, fourth in the Great Plains Region and eighth in the Eastern Region. Two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson announced he would be back stronger in 2012 with Kemenah joining the team. Wilson finished sixth in the National points, fifth in the Ohio and Great Plains Regions. Cole Duncan, who finished 10th in the Ohio Region points, announced he would be teaming up with Tony Kennedy in 2012 and planned to run for the Ohio Region title. Bryan Grove, owner of the #45 driven in 2011 by Rob Chaney to a 7th place finish in the Ohio Region points, announced Paul McMahan would pilot his sprint car in 2012. David Gravel, who finished third in the National and Ohio Region points and sixth in the Great Plains and Eastern Region, was unable to attend. Webb also was excited about partnering with UNOH. “We will sell this college and help recruit students. This is a great place filled with great people.” The UNOH All Stars released their 2012 schedule with 50-52 events. Webb said there are “seven to eight new tracks” and the 30th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek will feature eight and possibly nine races over nine days. For more information go to www.allstarsprint.com |

Screven Motor Speedway Management Cancels Event Set For Nov. 2 |
Camargo, IL (10-24-11) By Brian Liskai – Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., has cancelled the Winter Freeze m ake-up event scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 2, that was scheduled to wrap up the season for the All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars.
The race was originally scheduled in February, and after heat races were completed, rains forced the cancellation of the feature, and it, along with a separate All Star sanctioned event were rescheduled to the Nov. 2 date.
“As promoter/owner, I would like to apologize for making a very bad re-scheduling decision on our inaugural Winter Freeze rain-out back in February,” said Screven Promoter/Owner James Redd Griffin in a press release. “Unfortunately, the Wednesday night, November 2 show will be cancelled due to many fans expressing that a Wednesday night will be impossible to support. November 2 is a work night and most of all a school night for the kids. Without that support, running this show would be a bad financial decision for the track.”
“I understand that this may upset many fans that were planning to come down to attend this show prior to the World Finals at Charlotte. At first, this seemed to be the best time to catch the 410 sprinters, that rarely make their way South. However, from the response that I have received through phone/emails and personal contact, most have said that it is too difficult to plan to attend a show on a week night,” continued Griffin.
Griffin said all of the rain-out tickets, including the Winter Freeze, will still be honored at the remaining 2011 events at Screven Motor Speedway. He said all rain-out tickets from the inaugural Winter Freeze will be honored for Screven’s second attempt at the Winter Freeze on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 as the All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars will be at the track.
The Second Annual Winter Freeze will feature the All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars that will compete for a $5,000 to win event on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, and another $5,000 to win event on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012.
The cancellation ends the 2011 season for the All Star Circuit of Champions and Tim Shaffer will be crowned the series champion for the third straight year. He also won the series’ Ohio and Great Plains region points and the $20,000 and $10,000 prizes respectively. Though he was injured and out for the remainder of the season, the cancellation also means Lance Dewease is the All Star’s Eastern Region champion, earning $20,000.

Blaney scores 84th career All Star win, takes advantage of Shaffer's misfortune |
|
ROSSBURG, OH (10-1-2011) By Brian Liskai – It looked like Tim Shaffer was finally going to break his All Star Circuit of Champions drought at Eldora Speedway Saturday on University of Northwestern Ohio Night. But when Rob Chaney tumbled late in the race, Shaffer and Terry McCarl got together trying to avoid the crash and spun. This handed the lead to Blaney who had troubles of his own with a motor that just wouldn’t take off on restarts, but was good enough to take him to the victory, his 84th career All Star win.
"We kind of got lucky. Shaffer was probably going to win. When Chaney filliped Shaffer and McCarl got together and Shaffer spun. They put him on the tail for being involved in the crash…it was a judgment call," said Blaney beside his Ti22 Performance backed machine.
"My car didn't take off at all on the start until the gate by turn three. We have a mag problem or something. On that last restart I was just fortunate no one behind me could get around…the motor just wouldn’t take off,” added Blaney. “It feels good to get a win at Eldora again…it’s been a couple of years."
Shaffer would come back to finish seventh and claim the $20,000 prize for winning the All Star Circuit of Champion's Ohio Region points. Shaffer, who won the $10,000 Great Plaines Region points, also padded his National point lead.
"We came up on Chaney’s crash so quickly…and we both weren’t sure where he was going. You just have to make a decision on where to go and we both went low and I clipped the rear of his (McCarl) car and spun. It was just one of those deals. Dang I wanted to win an All Star race at Eldora…I’ve won three or four World of Outlaw races there, but I really wanted this one," said Shaffer beside his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook owned machine.
"It’s great we won the All Star’s Ohio deal…it's a nice reward for the hard work my guys put into this team," continued Shaffer whose #83 carries Kistler Engines/Kistler Racing Products sponsorship.
Blaney and Randy Hannagan would lead the field to the green with Hannagan taking the lead. But third starting Shaffer and fourth starting Brad Sweet clearly had the cars to beat. Shaffer would grab the early lead with Sweet applying constant pressure to “The Steel City Outlaw.” But, Sweet’s challenge would end with about 10 laps to go when he retired with mechanical woes.
It looked like Shaffer would drive away with the win, but Chaney got upside down in turn 1 with seven laps to go, and as Terry McCarl tried to avoid Chaney, he and Shaffer got together with Shaffer spinning. That gave the lead to Blaney who cruised to the win over Hannagan, who also finished second in the NRA Sprint Invaders’ feature, Danny Smith (up from 12th), David Gravel and Dustin Daggett.
Blaney's 84th career All Star win – his eighth of 2011 - moves him closer to all-time series win leader Kenny Jacobs who has 98.
For Hannagan, it was a great night at Tony Stewart’s Big E. He would also finish second in the NRA Sprint Invaders feature. “I felt good at the start and that’s when I knew I was a sitting duck. Usually if you’re tight at the beginning of the race here, you’re pretty good at the end. I was good early and new I was going to be in trouble late. The car just got loose at the end. But, for having only run a handful of 410 shows this year, we’ve had pretty good results. Hopefully we can do a little more of that next year and get into victory lane,” said Hannagan beside his Central Valley Meat Company/Kenny’s Components/Gaerte Engines backed machine. |

Sebetto edges Shaffer for thrilling $10,000 Fremont All Star win |
FREMONT, OH (9-17-11) By Brian Liskai – The difference was .045 seconds. Fremont, Ohio’s Bryan Sebetto edged two-time and defending All Star Circuit of Champions titlist Tim Shaffer for the biggest win of his career Saturday at Fremont Speedway. Sebetto, who has now won over $25,000 in the past two weeks, banged wheels with Shaffer as they came down the front stretch to the checkered and was able to win the Jim Ford Classic and its $10,000 prize. It was Sebetto’s fourth win of the year at “The Track That Action Built” and came after a second place finish the previous night to Shaffer. “Was that exciting?” yelled Sebetto over the roar of the hometown crowd after he climbed down from scaling the front stretch fence. “I didn’t know whether to just follow the lapped car through three and four and keep my line or push the issue and pull off the line. I could hear someone back there…I knew he (Shaffer) was coming. We banged wheels…I hope he’s not mad because that was for $10,000. We’re buddies but this is for the win,” continued Sebetto in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Burmeister Racing/JLH Contractors/Stephen Mapus Tools/Schiets Motorsports/Wendy’s Restaurant/R&R Auto Wrecking/Big D’s Pizza backed machine. “This is amazing. This team deserves this more than any team in the pits. They work so hard on this thing…they put their heart and soles and life savings into this to keep it on the race track. There’s just so many people that have made this possible…my racing career from the time I was a kid,” added Sebetto of his 17th career win at Fremont, which moves him into a tie for 30th on the all-time win list with Jack Hewitt and Jim Ward. Two weeks ago, Sebetto crashed his mount at Attica Raceway Park. The car was taken to local legend Mark Keegan who had to weld and fix the frame. And it was good enough to give Sebetto the biggest win of his young career – his second All Star victory in as many years. “I’m ready for the World of Outlaw race (on Oct. 15)…bring them on,” said Sebetto. “There’s no better chassis than a Maxim in my opinion…no matter what we do to it it’s fast. Mikey Summer works his butt off and he deserves every bit of thanks he gets. And Mango and Jay and Rollie and Tommie and the whole crew…they do so much.” Shaffer was just as excited as Sebetto with the outcome. “I was inching up on him little by little and if I had a chance I knew it would be in one and two and I hit it right…boy I nailed it that time and got a run on him down the back straight away. And then it got kind of funneled down and got tight and I was like ‘man I got underneath him but I pushed up the track. It was just a great race and a lot of fun. Bryan and his guys did a great job…hats off to them,” said Shaffer beside his Kistler Engines/Kistler Racing Products backed #83. “If anyone had to beat me I’m glad it was him…he’s a good friend. We gave him a shot at it. These guys have been doing a great job here all year.” But looking at the bigger picture, the weekend gives Shaffer a big advantage in the chase for his third consecutive All Star national title and the $20,000 Ohio Region championship. And while the crowd was abuzz about the tremendous battle for the win, they were also treated to another back to front charge as Greg Wilson sliced his way from dead last – 24th – to a third place finish. “I knew if we could just get in the race – we haven’t been timing worth a darn and we hurt our real good engine last night. I have to thank Paul Kistler for helping us out with this engine. It isn’t the stoutest thing but the damn thing just keeps on trucking. Daniel Smith had this car awesome. I have to thank the good Lord above for looking out for us. We’ve had a couple of rough weeks here. But my wife and my dad and everyone that’s been helping…they’ve stuck by me,” said Wilson beside his All Star Plumbing and Heating/DNC Hydraulics/Ohio Logistics backed machine. In the 50-lap All Star feature, Sebetto and Todd Heller would lead the field to the green. Sebetto would bolt into the lead while Jac Haudenschild would steal second with Heller, Cole Duncan, Shaffer and Brad Haudenschild in tow. Shaffer would drive the bottom groove into third on lap four as Sebetto pulled away. The caution would fly for a Cap Henry spin on lap 8 with the running order Sebetto, Haudenschild, Shaffer and Duncan. Sebetto was just ready to hit lapped traffic when the caution came out and Haudenschild had been closing. With a clear track, Sebetto again pulled away, as he set a blistering pace, encountering lapped traffic by the 15th circuit. As the leaders raced through traffic, Shaffer quickly closed on Haudenschild, taking the runner-up spot on lap 20. Shaffer immediately starting reeling in Sebetto as they ran nose to tail until the caution flew on lap 26 for a Dale Blaney spin. Sebetto again had a clear track with a lapped car separating him and Shaffer while four lapped cars back it was Haudenschild in third, followed by Holtgraver, David Gravel and last place starter Greg Wilson. Sebetto would pull away again from Shaffer slightly as Haudenschild now had his hands full with Gravel and Wilson. Shaffer began slowly inching closer to Sebetto, and when they raced back into lapped traffic with 15 circuits to go, the pair again ran nose to tail. The final caution would fly on lap 41, again handing Sebetto with a clear track, which he used on the ensuing restart to pull away slightly. Meanwhile Wilson had moved into third. However, with two laps to go, Shaffer had quickly closed the game and raced to Sebetto’s inside. As they took the white flag, they raced into turns one and two with Sebetto up top and Shaffer on the bottom. The pair raced side by side into turn three with a lapped car right in front of Sebetto. Shaffer pounced, driving to the inside as Sebetto diamonded off the corner and charged at Shaffer. The pair banged wheels down the front stretch with Sebetto winning by a bumper. |

Shaffer scores 10th All Star win to open Ford Classic at Fremont |
FREMONT, OH (9-16-11) By Brian Liskai– Tim Shaffer shot around Rob Chaney in lapped traffic on lap 14 and then benefitted from a caution to give him a clear track as he went on to score the All Star Circuit of Champions win to open the Jim Ford Classic at Fremont Speedway on Friday night. It marked the 98th appearance of the All Stars at Fremont Speedway.
The win on All Pro Cylinder Heads Night was the 10th series win of the year for the two-time All Star champion and the 11th career win at Fremont. He will seek to sweep the weekend on Saturday in the $10,000-to-win, 50-lap finale on Ludwig Propane Night. It was also Shaffer’s 45th career All Star win to move him into sixth on the series’ all-time win list, just eight behind Frankie Kerr.
“Things really got interesting there for awhile…it was a great race. I didn’t think we were going to get there. But Brian (Kemenah, crew chief) and guys did such a great job on the car…it came on late. That caution helped a bunch…it seemed like everything kind of fell our way tonight,” said Shaffer in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook Motorsports entry.
“You have to take it when it happens like this because a lot of nights it don’t. That’s dirt track racing…it changes all night and my guys changed the car and hit it right on the money,” added Shaffer of his Kistler Engines/Kistler Racing Products/VRP Shocks #83. “Tomorrow’s a whole new night and things can change. You have to start with a good qualifying effort and get through your heat and go from there. It will be a longer race which I seem to like…I just hope we can be up here tomorrow.”
While Shaffer had to be considered the odds on favorite to win – he’s won the $10,000 Ohio Sprint Speed Week Finale at “The Track That Action Built in June – many of the fans were hoping local driver Bryan Sebetto could provide an upset. The 2011 Kistler Racing Products FAST champion has won three times at Fremont this season, including the previous week.
Sebetto. the track’s current point leader, would charge from 10th to finish second.
“You can’t give Tim Shaffer a clear track…he’s the best in the business…the only shot I had was lapped traffic. He’s way better in traffic than I am…it would have taken him getting hung up in the right spot and giving me an opening. Congrats to Tim and the whole crew…they did a great job. You know they are the car to beat every time you pull into the pits for an All Star race..any race for that matter,” said Sebetto beside his Burmeister Racing/Steven Mapus Tools/JLH General Contractors backed #16.
"Once started to get the wing back a little bit I could move around…I was really good on the bottom in one and two but it was hard to hit the spot without sliding up into the slick,” added Sebetto.
For Rob Chaney who led the first 13 laps, a solid third place run was just was the Bryan Grove team needed.
“I’m not disappointed at all. We’ve really struggled…we’ve been fast since speedweek and our results don’t show it. We got a top three finish and hopefully we can finish the year out with some good finishes without any problems,” said Chaney beside his Canton Erectors/Tim Hawkins Logging backed #45.
In the 30-lap All Star feature, Dale Blaney and Rob Chaney would lead the field to the green, with Chaney getting the advantage while Jac Haudenschild and Shaffer would give chase. Shaffer would take third on lap four, but Haudenschild would fight back to regain the position on the next lap.
As Chaney hit lapped traffic on the ninth circuit, Blaney would close while Haudenschild and Shaffer continued to run side-by-side for third. Meanwhile Byron Reed, Brandon Martin, Sebetto and 13th starter Dean Jacobs would race heard for fifth. Shaffer would grab third on the 11th lap and drove around Blaney into second a lap later, with Haudenschild taking third on lap 13. Just as the half-way point was completed, the caution would fly when David Gravel lost a right front wheel. The running order was Shaffer, a lapped car, Chaney, Sebetto, Haudenschild, Blaney and Jacobs.
With a clear track, Shaffer would pull away slightly while Chaney was locked in a torrid battle for second with Sebetto. With four laps to go, Sebetto was able to drive under Chaney for second with Haudenschild and Jacobs rounding out the top five. But, Sebetto ran out of time as Shaffer took the checkered. Chaney, Jacobs and Haudenschild would round out the top five.
