All Stars will be busy over next two weeks

ImageCamargo, IL-(6-29-10)- Coming off a very successful and exciting Ohio Sprint Speedweek, the cars and stars of the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions will be in action on the high banks of KC Raceway in Chillicothe, Ohio on Saturday, July 3.

In what has become a must-see event, Budweiser presents “The Night the Stars Come Out,” with the All Star sprints running for $5,000 to win and the AMRA Late Models also competing for a top prize of $5,000. The Advance Services Modifieds will also be in action.

The All Stars recently competed at the three-eighths mile high banked KC Raceway on Saturday, June 19 on night #2 of Ohio Sprint Speedway. Defending All Star champion Tim Shaffer scored a dominating win with Dale Blaney edging Brandon Wimmer for second, and Kyle Sauder and Speedweek champion David Gravel rounding out the top five. But who could forget the drive by former KC Raceway owner Jim Neir who blasted from the 24th starting spot to finish sixth.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for kids ages 6-12. Pit passes are $35.

In a schedule update, the Sept. 25 make-up race at Port Royal Speedway in Pennsylvania has been cancelled. All Star officials and Port Royal officials are working to find a date for the event, which originally was scheduled in May but was rained out, then rescheduled for June and was rained out.

The All Stars will be busy in July. They kick-off four races in a five day span on Friday and Saturday, July 9 and 10 at West Virginia Motor Speedway. The massive five-eighths mile long track is located near Mineral Wells, W. Va., just south of Parkersburg, W.Va. on the west side of I-77. It marks the return of the All Stars to the big track, a venue they have not visited since 2004.

The Governor’s Cup weekend kicks off Friday with a $3,000 to win affair with the “Almost Heaven 25”. The FASTRAK Mid-Ohio Valley Touring Series late models will also compete for $1,200 to win. Also, the Jack Shutts Throwback 20’s” $800 to win HotMod and Stock Car Invites will be held featuring NASCAR style driver introductions, pit road with mandatory pit stops and tire changes. Saturday’s event will pay the All Star sprint feature winner $5,000 and $10,000 to win the late model event with the TSMA Modifieds vying for $1,200. There will be a pre-race autograph session from 5-5:30 p.m.

Gates will open both Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. with hot laps underway at 7 p.m. For more information go to www.wvspeedway.com

“This is going to be a big event for the All Stars. Scott Strode, Brian Ferrell, Daniel Patterson, Lynn Chapman and everyone at Mountain State Motorsports Promotions have worked very hard to bring West Virginia Motor Speedway back to prominence and we’re excited to be a part of that,” said All Star President Guy Webb.

The All Stars began competition at West Virginia Motor Speedway in 1985 with Jack Hewitt taking the victory Tim Green and Kelly Kinser. The All Stars did not return to the track until 1991 when Chuck Ward too the win over Hewitt and Frank Kerr. In 1992, Kevin Huntley would take the victory over Rocky Hodges and Jeff Shepherd. It would be another long break before the All Stars would return to the big track in 2004 with Kenny Jacobs securing the win over Chad Kemenah and Danny Smith.

From West Virginia, the All Stars will travel on Sunday and compete on Monday, July 12 at Can Am Motorsports Park in LaFargeville, New York, just off NYS Rt. 411.

The four-tenths of a mile dirt track plays host to weekly modified racing on its long straights and wide, sweeping turns. Joining the All Star sprints will be the SUNY Canton 358 modified series and SUNY Canton Sportsman Series. This marks the first ever visit of the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions to the track.

The All Stars will then travel to Utica-Rome Speedway on Tuesday, July 13. Located off St. Rt. 5 near Vernon, N.Y., the half-mile track known as “The Action Track of the East,” plays host to modifieds and stock car divisions on a weekly basis, but has also hosted the ESS 360 sprints and special late model events.

Joining the All Star sprints will be the Best of Four Thunder Pro Stock Series. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m. For more information go to www.uticaromespeedway.com

“We’re excited about going to Can Am and Utica-Rome for the first time to show those fans the thrill of 410 sprint racing,” said Webb.

Over $241,000 handed out during Ohio Sprint Speedweek

ImageCamargo, IL.- (6-29-10)-By Brian Liskai - With the way the weather has been in Ohio so far this spring and summer who would have thought the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars would get all nine nights of the 28th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek in? Well, it happened as six different drivers visited victory lane over the nine straight nights of racing across the Buckeye State.

Watertown, Connecticut’s David Gravel edged defending All Star champion and current point leader Tim Shaffer by just three points for the Ohio Sprint Speedweek crown. Gravel, who turned 18 during the tour, would also grab his first career All Star win, holding off Brad Sweet for the victory at Limaland Motorsports Park. Shaffer would score three wins during the week, at KC Raceway, Sharon Speedway and the $10,000 to win finale at Fremont Speedway. Four-time Speedweek Champion Dale Blaney would finish third in the standings, recording two wins during the week, at Millstream Speedway and Wayne County Speedway.

Other winners for the week were Byron Reed at Attica Raceway Park, Rob Chaney on a last lap, last corner pass at Hilltop Speedway, and Brad Sweet at Waynesfield Motorsports Park.

There was over $241,000 in prize money up for grabs during the nine nights of racing, and Shaffer took home the most loot, totaling $25,690. Blaney earned $18,080 over the nine nights with Gravel taking home $15,250. Chaney would bag $10,640 with Dean Jacobs earning $8,800 and 2009 Speedweek champion Stevie Smith heading to Pennsylvania with $8,320. With a couple of podium finishes Brandon Wimmer took home $8,300 with Lee Jacobs earning $7,900 and Tyler Walking earning $7,550. Former All Star champion Greg Wilson earned $6,150 over the nine nights with Bill Rose taking home $5,570 and Australian Mathew Reed earning $4,170. Rookie Cap Henry earned $3,820 while Kevin Lee grabbed $3,620 and Jared Ridge earned $3,020.

Other Speedweek notes:

Average car counts over Speedweek were in the mid-30s with Attica having the high car-count of the week at 42. There were 86 different drivers who competed during the nine nights of racing.

Fremont, Ohio’s Mark Keegan has now competed in at least one Ohio Sprint Speedweek event in each of the 28 years it has been held, even recording a second place finish at Attica Raceway Park this year.

Four-time Speedweek champion Dale Blaney has not finished out of the top five in the Speedweek points since 2002. Blaney’s two wins during the 2010 Speedweek take him to 75 All Star victories over his career, as he is second on the all-time All Star win list behind Kenny Jacobs who has 98 wins.

There were a couple of driver birthdays celebrated over Speedweek. Champion David Gravel turned 18 on Wednesday, June 23, while Tim Shaffer celebrated his 43rd birthday Saturday, June 26 with a $10,000 victory at Fremont Speedway.

Shaffer wins thrilling speedweek finale at Fremont

FREMONT, Ohio -(6-26-10)- By Brian Liskai- In arguably the best feature of the nine straight nights comprising the 28th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek, defending O'Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions titlist Tim Shaffer  blasted around Stevie Smith on lap 45 and went on to the $10,000 payday on Budweiser Nightat Fremont Speedway.

For Shaffer it was his third win during the nine straight nights of racing and it came on his 43rd birthday. It is his 23rd career All Star victory and his sixth at Fremont Speedway. It also adds to his current point lead for the overall All Star championship.David Gravel's fifth place finish gave him the 2010 Ohio Sprint Speedweek Championship.

"I wasn't even dreaming about this..this is awesome. We just ran consistent nine nights in a row and even got a win (at Lima on Friday). We had four top fives this week. The crew and all the sponsors.Rob Hart has this car going consistently awesome at every track we went too. We qualified well every night," said Gravel beside his DDR Motorsports, P&M Transportation backed #89.

"The Track That Action Built" lived up to that billing in the 50-lap feature, with lead changes all over the track throughout. After Jared Ridge led the first 15 laps with Phil Gressman hounding him, Gressman would use a lapped machine as a pick and drove under Ridge in  turn 4 to take the lead.

Defending Speedweek champion Stevie Smith would move into second on lap 22 and immediately raced side by side with Gressman for the lead. Smith would lead lap 24, but Gressman would drive back by for the top spot. Shaffer, who started third, dropped back at the start to run in fifth, He moved into fourth on lap 28 and seemed content to cruise awhile behind Gravel. Shaffer would take third on lap 33 as Gressman and Smith continued their torrid battle up front.

With nine laps remaining, Gressman and Smith raced in heavy lapped traffic, allowing Shaffer to close. Gressman, Smith and Shaffer ran nose to tail with Shaffer diving under Smith for second on lap 44 and around Gressman into the lead a lap later, bringing Smith along. Shaffer and Smith battled side by side the next five laps. As Shaffer took the white flag, Smith ducked to his inside and the pair ran side-by-side down the back stretch, Smith gave it one last shot in turns three and four, but Shaffer hit the cushion and rocked off to the checkered.

"When I looked up at the scoreboard and it said 29 laps I thought there was only like 10 laps to go. Then I remembered its 50 laps and I better get going," said Shaffer beside his Kistler Engines, VRP Shocks, Kistler Racing Products, Technique Roofing backed #83.

"The car just kept getting better and the track came to us. I have to thank Aaron Call and  Janet Holbrook, Kistler Engines, J&J Chassis and it goes on. These people stand behind us and it's awesome and a lot of fun," continued Shaffer in the Engine Pro Victory Lane. "Three wins this week is pretty darn good. You get greedy and want more, but this week is tough. I don't care who you are and what people are around you, it goes from not eating right and not sleeping right and travelling up and down the road.to be standing here is awesome."

Pole-sitter Jared Ridge took the early lead with defending Fremont Speedway champion Brock Mayes, Gravel, Shaffer and Gressman in tow. Ridge was setting a quick pace and was hitting lapped traffic by the fourth circuit, but the action would grind to a halt when Cap Henry took a wild ride in turn four. He was taken to the hospital for a check-up but later released. On the restart, Ridge could not shake Mayes as Gressman drove around Gravel into third. A lap later and Ridge had put a little distance between himself and Mayes who now had his hands full with Gressman. Gressman would take second on lap 8 and began to steadily close on Ridge. Mayes' run would end on lap 12 as his car lost power, bringing out the caution. The running order was Ridge, Gressman, Gravel, Smith and Shaffer.

Gressman would use the restart to put a lot of pressure on Ridge and finally pulled off the lead pass on lap 16, using a lapped machine as a pick to drive around Ridge. Smith would drive under Gravel for third on lap 19 and into second three laps later. With Gressman in heavy lapped traffic, Smith began to close and drove under Gressman exiting turn four to lead lap 24.Gressman would slingshot around the high side of one and two and back into the lead with Ridge falling back in third.

Gravel would take third on lap 27, bringing Shaffer into fourth as Ridge continued to slide back in the field. Dean Jacobs would stop in turn four on lap 31 to bring out the final caution with Gressman leading Smith, Gravel, Shaffer, Ridge, Lee Jacobs and Brad Sweet. On the ensuing restart, Gressman could not shake Smith, as Gravel and Shaffer battled for third. Shaffer would take third on lap 33 and began to quickly close on Gressman and Smith. With 13 laps remaining, Smith and Gressman raced wheel to wheel for the lead with Shaffer glued to their rear bumpers. The top trio would race nose to tail over the next seven laps, slicing in and out of traffic as the crowd rose to their feet.

Shaffer would steal second from Smith on lap 44 and he and Smith would both get by Gressman a lap later. As Shaffer battled lapped machines, Smith stayed close and gave it one final shot in turns three and four on the last lap. Shaffer would blasted off the high side cushion to the checkered with Smith, Gressman, Sweet and Gravel rounding out the top five.

For Smith, a second place run on the final night was redemption for a tough week.

"That was one of the toughest races I've ever run. This place is known for good, close racing and you know we're all running with our cars and ourselves on the line and it was rough and hard to keep it on a line. It was the same for everybody.we wanted to try and win it, we love coming to Fremont, but we'd like to see the old Fremont track back. That's why it's so famous.that's why it's still here," said Smith beside his Zemco Headers, Zemco Speed Equipment backed #1.

"This Speedweek wasn't what  were expecting, but I have a lot of confidence in these guys. They really work hard and I'm very, very thankful for where I am here. It's really a good thing and I've had a lot of fun with these guys. We had a bad week.it started at Attica, leading the race and spinning out and it went down from there. I crashed in time trials one night and we fell back. Tim has just had a good car this year. His guys are doing a great job and we'll have to be happy with second," added Smith.

For Gressman, his third place performance left him a little disappointed after leading 28 laps.

"I just started getting a little free there at the end. I couldn't get through three and four the way I wanted to. You know when you lead early bad things usually happen toward the ends. We put forth our best effort. Hats off to Stevie and Tim they did a good job. Lapped traffic was hard because the track was so good. It widened up and it was a good race. Have to thank all the fans for coming out and my car owner De Genzman," said Gressman beside his Ludwig Propane, Level Performance ProShocks backed #53.

"Phil was running a great race and Stevie, running in second was in bad air and I was able to come from a distance and make ground and pass at the right time. It just worked out," said Shaffer of his winning move.

Gravel gets 1st All Star win at Limaland

Lima, Ohio -(6-25-10)- By Brian Liskai- David Gravel was not about to let another opportunity slip through his grasp.

The Connecticut driver, who ran out of fuel at Tuesday’s Ohio Sprint Speedweek event on the last corner of the last lap while leading, held off a last lap charge by Brad Sweet, to claim his first O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions victory during night #8 of Speedweek on Elwer Fence Night at Limaland Motorsports Park.

The win moves Gravel into the lead for the Ohio Sprint Speedweek title and solidifies him into the top three in the overall All Star championship hunt. It comes just two days after his 18th birthday.

“I wasn’t going to run out of fuel tonight…I leaned it out on cautions and kept an eye on it. I saw Brad (Sweet) on the bottom and I knew if I held my line I’d be alright. I wasn’t going to let this one get away from me,” said Gravel beside his DDR Motorsports, P&M Transportation backed #89G.

On Tuesday at Hilltop Speedway, Gravel was on his way to victory when he began running low on fuel, allowing Rob Chaney to sneak by on the outside of the fourth turn coming to the checkered. Gravel had to settle for second.

“I have to thank my crew and my dad…they have continued to work hard. We brought Rob Hart onto the team a couple of months ago and he has us going in the right direction,” added Gravel, who became the sixth different winner in eight Speedweek races.

For Sweet, the past three days have been fantastic as he has recorded a win at Waynesfield Motorsports Park and a fifth place run at Sharon Speedway on Thursday.

“I could have tried to slide up in front of him, but he was going for his first win and he probably wouldn’t have lifted and we both would have been flipping,” said Sweet beside his Kasey Kahne Racing, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, Sage backed #49. “I tried to scare him, but he was too good to let that happen.

Byron Reed, who opened the 28th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek a week ago with a win at Attica Raceway Park, would settle for third.

“I always like coming here…it seems we always end up on the front stretch at the end of the night. I wish I could have been better in turn two.. I was as good as any of them in three and four,” said Reed beside his Reebar Diecasting backed #5.

Gravel would jump into the early lead from his pole staring spot with Tim Shaffer, Reed, Sweet, Dale Blaney and Chaney in tow. A caution on lap 9 would bunch up the field, with Shaffer racing to Gravel’s outside to challenge for the lead. Gravel hit lapped traffic by the 16th circuit on the fast quarter-mile with Shaffer, Reed, Sweet and Dale Blaney following. Traffic would hold Gravel up, allowing Shaffer to close. Reed was in his own battle for third with Sweet, surrendering the position on lap 18.

Just when things were heating up for the lead between Gravel, Shaffer, Sweet, Reed, and Dale Blaney, a caution with fly on lap 24. With a lapped machine between himself and Shaffer, Gravel would take advantage of the clear track to pull away slightly on the restart, leaving Shaffer to battle Sweet, Reed and Blaney for second. Fans were now watching the #97 of Dean Jacobs who got upside down in his heat, only to come back and race from 14th to sixth.

Disaster struck for Shaffer on lap 29, as he stopped on the track to avoid a spin, sending him to the tail and handing second to Sweet. Again on the restart Gravel was able to pull away slightly with Sweet comfortably in second and Reed battling with Blaney, Jacobs and Brian Paulus. With four laps to go, Gravel had caught the back of the field and struggled to get through, allowing Sweet to close. As Gravel took the white flag, Sweet was right on his rear bumper. Gravel chose his high line in turns three and four with lapped cars right in front of him while Sweet ducked low as they raced side-by-side for the win. Gravel was not going to be denied and blasted down the front stretch for the victory. Sweet, Reed, Paulus and Jacobs would round out the top five.

Shaffer extends All Star point lead with Ohio Speedweek win at Sharon

HARTFORD, Ohio -(6-24-10)- By Brian Liskai After winning night #2 of the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek last Saturday, Tim Shaffer hasn’t had the best of luck or results all week. That changed Thursday at Sharon Speedway, the 7th of nine stops during Speedweek. The Aliquippa, Pa. driver and defending All Star champion took the lead on lap 12 from his ninth starting spot, and went on to claim his third All Star victory of 2010.

More importantly, Shaffer’s 22nd career All Star victory gave him the lead in the Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship points and extended his lead over two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson by 407 points for a second consecutive overall All Star championship and that $50,000 prize at the end of the season.

“I just tried to be careful, it seemed like I was ripping the tires off that thing. I just tried to keep the tires under me and look for the checkered,” Shaffer said beside his Kistler Racing Products, Kistler Engines backed CH Motorsports owned entry.

Shaffer joined four-time Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion Dale Blaney as the only repeat winners so far during the 28th annual trek across the Buckeye State.

When the green flag dropped in the 30-lap, 24-car O'Reilly Auto Parts All Star Sprint A-Main Tyler Walker (Los Angeles) went to the lead, but Sharon Speedway veteran Scott Bonnell (Fairview, Pa.) didn't fall far behind. Brandon Wimmer (Fairmount, Ind.) held onto the third position until lap eight, when Shaffer made a move to the inside of turn one.

The yellow came out on lap 12, setting up a single file restart and Shaffer tried to make a move on the outside of Walker for first, forcing them to run side-by-side until Shaffer gained momentum out of turn two to take the lead.

On lap 18, Wimmer drove under Walker for second in turn two with Blaney trying to hold off Brad Sweet (Grass Valley, Calif.) for fourth. Shaffer was setting the pace and avoiding lap traffic with five circuits to go and was able to hold onto that lead to take the checkered. Wimmer scored his second podium finish of the week with a great second place run in Rick Ferkel’s #0 with Walker taking yet another third place performance in the Keen Motorsports entry. Blaney would bring George Fisher’s #2 home in fourth with Wednesday night’s winner Sweet rounding out the top five in his Kasey Kahne owned machine. The drive of the night went to Apollo, Pennsylvania’s Ed Lynch Jr. who raced from his 20th place starting spot to sixth at the finish.

Sweet gets first All Star win during night #6 of Ohio Sprint Speedweek at Waynesfield

Sweet 1 WAYNESFIELD, Ohio -(6-23-10)- By Brian Liskai- A couple of drivers who started in sprint cars and now dabble in NASCAR, returned to their racing roots Wednesday during night #6 of the Ohio Sprint Speedweek with the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions at Waynesfield Motorsports Park. California’s Brad Sweet and Ohio native now North Pointe, N.C. resident Dave “The Buckeye Bullet” Blaney would put on a thrilling performance on Ohio Logistics Night at the fast, high-banked one-third mile bullring.

Dave Blaney, the 1989 Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion competing in only his second sprint car event this season – the other coming the night before at Hilltop Speedway where he tipped over late in the race while running third – and Sweet, who has split his time between sprints and NASCAR trucks, traded the lead several times during the 40-lap affair. Sweet would eventually make the fewest mistakes and avoid problems to become the fifth different winner of the six consecutive nights of racing. It was Sweet’s first ever All Star win.

“The track was awesome. Getting to race against these guys…I mean these are some of the best drivers in the business. It means a lot to be able to get a win against them. I just want to thank the fans for coming out and making this possible for us,” said Sweet beside his Kasey Kahne Racing, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Parts and Service, Sage backed #49.

With severe weather all around the area, the real thunder was on the track as Waynesfield is becoming one of the most exciting stops on the Ohio Sprint Speedweek trail. It marked the fourth straight year for a Speedweek show at “The Field.”

The 40-lap A-main got off to a rough start as a multi-car pile-up on the start involved Stevie Smith, Brock Mayes, Tyler Walker, Matthew Reed, Greg Wilson, Todd Kane and Jared Ridge. Wilson, Kane and Ridge were able to restart. When the green flew again, Dave Blaney, who is sixth on the All Star’s all-time win list with 44 victories, would blast into the lead with Texan Gary Wright, Dave’s brother Dale Blaney, Sweet and David Gravel right on his rear bumper. Shortly after, Dean Jacobs would pull into the infield with a broken suspension, but the action continued. Wright would drive around Dave Blaney for the lead and built a sizeable lead until lap 10 when he missed his marks and drove over the cushion in turn two, handing the lead to Dave Blaney who had been engaged in a great battle with Sweet. Wright would only fall back to third.

A caution for a Craig Mintz spin on lap 17 bunched up the field, but Blaney used the clear track to pull away slightly from Sweet who had his hands full with Wright and dale Blaney. On lap 23, Dave Blaney makes the same mistake that cost Wright the lead, bobbling against the cushion in turn two, moving Sweet into the lead with Wright now in second and Blaney back to third.

Disaster nearly struck for Dave Blaney on lap 27 when All Star rookie of the year leader Cap Henry spun in turn four, nearly collecting the Buckeye Bullet. The running order was Sweet, Wright, Dave Blaney, Dale Blaney, Tim Shaffer and Gravel, who was celebrating his 18th birthday. On the restart, Dave Blaney would get by Wright to move back into second and began closing on Sweet, but that battle would have to be put on hold as Cale Conley flipped down the front stretch. Again on the restart, Sweet utilized the clean air to pull away slightly while Dave Blaney, Wright and Dale Blaney continually raced side-by-side for second. Wright would steal the runner-up spot with 10 laps to go, with four-time Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion Dale Blaney getting by his brother for third on lap 36.

Sweet would fly to the checkers with Wright, Dale Blaney, Dave Blaney and Shaffer rounding out the top five. It was learned after the race that Dave Blaney’s right rear tire was losing air late in the race, ending with only three pounds of air pressure left.

For Wright, his Ohio Sprint Speedweek has been a rollercoaster ride as he gets used to the Ohio track conditions, running Goodyear tires and a flat top wing.

“This motor is 10 years old but it works great for little tracks like this. Getting the car to handle good is the key to running well at these smaller tracks and we had it pretty good tonight,” said Wright beside his Lubbock Wrecker Service, David Brown’s Sports Center, The Shop Motorsports backed #9x.

Dale Blaney, a four-time Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion, continues to look strong as he bounced back from mechanical woes suffered Wednesday after Speedweek wins on Sunday and Monday.

“I don’t get to race against my brother (Dave) much so this is a really cool deal. The track was really good and we had a good run tonight,” said Blaney beside his George Fisher Racing, Ti22 backed #2.

Chaney gets last lap, last corner pass for Ohio Speedweek win in front of hometown crowd at Hilltop

R Chaney MILLERSBURG, Ohio -(6-22-10) - By Brian Liskai -  Rob Chaney passed David Gravel exiting turn four coming to the checkered flag to score the 40-lap victory Tuesday for night #5 of O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek, leaving the huge hometown crowd at Hilltop Speedway all abuzz.

“I didn’t even know I won. When I passed Tim Shaffer (on lap 32 of the 40-lap affair for third), I knew I was close to the front. This is awesome to do this in front of my family and friends. Bryan Grove and the crew gave me a great car tonight. I just had to be patient and save the tires,” said Chaney, who started eighth and utilized the high groove around the high-banked little track.

“I feel bad for David (Gravel) to get that close and not get the win…it’s heartbreaking. I know, I’ve been there before,” added Chaney beside his Canton Erectors backed #45.

It marked Chaney’s third career All Star victory.

In fact, Chaney didn’t become a threat for the win until a lap 27 restart when he drove from sixth into fourth. Chaney worked on defending All Star champion Tim Shaffer the next four laps before driving under him in turn two to take third. Tyler Walker was the next victim in Chaney’s march to the front, and he drove around him in turns three and four and into second with four to go. As leader David Gravel, from Watertown, Conn., who will celebrate his 18th birthday Wednesday, took the white flag, Chaney was on his rear bumper. Gravel drove low in turns three and four, his engine sputtering as his machine ran low on fuel. Chaney would blast to the outside and the two raced side-by-side out of turn four with Chaney’s momentum carrying him to the win.

“I ran out of fuel here again. This is the third time I’ve been here and the second time I’ve run out of fuel…it’s just so disappointing. I had this one won. My car was just so good on the bottom. With about five laps to go, the engine began sputtering… I just couldn’t believe it,” said dejected Gravel beside his DDR Motorsports, P&M Transportation, Hometown Wheels backed #89G. “At least this time I finished the race.”

Los Angeles, California’s Tyler Walker would lead the first 10 laps before Gravel would drive under him for the top spot. Walker would fight back to regain the lead on lap 13 as he and Gravel thrilled the crowed with their side-by-side, slide job trading racing. Walker would run in the top three throughout the race and would bring the Keen Motorsports #17 home in third at the end.

“We have not run these Goodyear tires much and we haven’t raced on slick tracks like this so my crew and I have had a steep learning curve. My hats off to my guys…they have worked their tails off to change this thing around…we’re figuring it out,” said Walker beside his Peterbuilt, Hunter’s Truck Sales backed #17.

“I lost this one…I burned the tires off way too early. I have to learn to be more patient. My thanks to the Keens for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to resurrect my career,” added Walker.

The race got off to a slow start, with one lap complete, Cole Duncan and Todd Kane got together in turn one to bring out the caution. Outside front row starter Walker would blast into the lead on the restart with Texan Gary Wright, Gravel, NASCAR driver Dave Blaney, Matthew Reed and Dean Jacobs in tow. The caution would fly on lap 9, just as the leaders were hitting the back of the field. Another quick yellow, and Walker would use the clear track to jump back into the lead, but not for long. Gravel, who moved around Wright into second on lap 9, would drive to Walker’s inside exiting turn four on lap 11 to take the lead with Blaney getting around Wright for third on lap 10.

Walker would drive the high line to regain the lead on lap 13 as he and Gravel continued to race side-by-side with Blaney closing. The leaders would catch lapped traffic on lap 18, and the “Connecticut Kid” would use one as a pick to regain the lead. Blaney would show his old sprint car racing form to drive under Walker into second at the halfway mark, but “Tee dub” would retake the runner-up position on lap 22.

The action would slow on lap 26 for a Greg Wilson, Matthew Reed collision. On the ensuing restart, Dave Blaney would drive into the turn two guardrail, putting his #55 on its lid and ending his great run. The running order was now Gravel, Walker, Dean Jacobs, 9th starter Tim Shaffer, Gary Wright and Chaney. When the green flew again, Shaffer would blast into third, with Chaney driving from sixth into fourth. The car on the move was Brandon Wimmer who started 19th and was not 7th.

Gavel would continue to lead, with Walker and Shaffer racing each other hard for second with Chaney waiting to pounce. Chaney would wait to take third on lap 32 as Gavel was mired in traffic, allowing Walker, Chaney and Shaffer to close. With five laps to go, Chaney would drive around Walker into second. As Gravel raced under the flags with just two laps remaining, Chaney quickly closed with Walker and Shaffer right there as well. Gravel would take the white flag with Chaney glued to his rear bumper while Walker stuck his nose under Chaney for second with Shaffer in the mix. As Gravel dove to the bottom of turns three and four one final time, Chaney would slingshot around the top to race to the win. Gravel, Walker, Shaffer and Dean Jacobs would round out the top five. Blaney gets 2nd win in a row at Wayne County on night #4 of Ohio Sprint Speedweek

ORRVILLE, Ohio - (6-21-10) - By Brian Liskai - There's a lot of history with Wayne County Speedway and Ohio Sprint Speedweek. And now Dale Blaney is a big part of that history. The Hartford, Ohio driver led all 30 laps to claim night #4 at Wayne County Speedway for his 75th career O'Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions feature.

For Blaney, a four-time Ohio Speedweek champion, it was his second consecutive victory, as he won Sunday at Millstream Speedway.

"It was just our night. We qualified well and got to start up front and that was the key. This car has just been great lately. George (Fisher, owner) and Troy (Psurny) have been working hard and I have a lot of confidence now," said Blaney, a three-time All Star champion beside his Ti22 Performance backed #22.

Blaney, who sits second on the All Star's career win list, is behind Kenny Jacobs, who has 97 victories. Jacobs' grandfather Pete, was one of the founders of Wayne County Speedway. Kenny was on hand Monday night.

The story of the night - despite Blaney's win - was the second place finish of Australian Matthew Reed. Never having been to the historical Wayne County Speedway, he was the fast qualifier and finished second in the feature.

"I've never raced on a fast, slick track like this. It demands a lot of patience, and I learned a lot tonight," said Reed beside his Centastate Civil Contractors backed #V92.

California's Tyler Walker was one of the few drivers to move off the bottom of the track. Driving to the middle on a lap 19 restart, he would get past Bill Rose on lap 21 and would bring the Keen Motorsports #17 home in third.

"I don't get to race on tracks like this, but I've learned a lot. I got my start at the Ohio tracks with Jac Haudenschild and to get a top three at a place where he started is awesome," said Walker beside his Hunters Truck Sales, Peterbuilt backed sprinter.

At the drop of green for the 30 laps feature - at a track that has been a steady stop over the 28 years of the Ohio Sprint Speedweek - Blaney would jump into the lead with Reed, Rose, Stevie Smith and Gary Wright in tow. The first caution would fly on lap five for a Jamie Miller spin. Blaney would flex his muscle and pull away on the restart while Reed held of Rose.

The momentum of the race suffered on lap 11 with a spat of cautions - four in a row in fact. However, it kept Blaney out of lapped traffic and gave him a clear track, which he would utilize to his advantage to pull away. Reed, however, had his hands full with Rose and Smith for second while Walker was patient in fifth with Gary Wright in sixth.

The final caution would fly on lap 18 with the running order Blaney, Reed, Rose, Smith, Walker, Wright, Byron Reed and David Gravel. On the restart, Blaney would once again pull away with Reed comfortably in second while Walker went to the middle of the track to battle Rose for third. Walker's move would pay off on lap 22, but he could not get close to Reed.

Blaney would take the checkered in front of the huge crowd with Reed, Walker, Rose and Smith rounding out the top five.

Blaney nabs night #3 of Ohio Speedweek at Millstream

Dale BlaneyFINDLAY, Ohio - (6-20-10) - By Brian Liskai-  Dale Blaney had one goal coming into the 28th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek – win a fifth Speedweek championship. He took a big step toward that goal Sunday, winning night #3 at Millstream Speedway in a dominating performance on Kistler Engines/Kistler Racing Products Night.

It was the “Low Rider’s” 74th career O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions victory and his second at Millstream in the 51st appearance of the series at the track.

“It was great the modifieds ran first…they kind of cleaned off the track a little bit. I knew once it got cleaned you could run all over. You could run up or down. George said I was okay on that yellow so I was just running it smooth and easy,” said Blaney beside his Ti22 sponsored George Fisher Racing #2. “George and Troy (Psurney) are two awesome guys and they had the car really, really good tonight.”

Blaney, a three-time All Star champion, took the lead from Mike Linder on lap 9 and pulled away from the field. Only two late race cautions would slow his pace as he took the checkered over Phil Gressman, Lee Jacobs, Greg Wilson and Stevie Smith.

“I had some trouble with some lapped cars and I can’t be messing around once you get Dale out front…we needed to be right behind him. But all and all we had a good car. I’m happy with the guys and everyone’s hard work,” said Gressman beside his Genzman Racing, Level Performance, G&C Construction backed #53. “I feel like we’ve put together a pretty good team. I just don’t get a chance to go to enough All Star races, but we’ve got a good car and a good team and we’re going to stay focused on what we’re doing and keep working hard.”

Jacobs, who started eighth, hung around the top five most of the race.

“I had a good car from the get-go. I could pass cars on the top and the bottom. Aaron Hammer did a hell of a job tonight…the whole crew, Timmy, Kyle, Larry and Randy Hammer. Thanks to the whole Hammer family and the opportunity to drive their race car. For what they had to work with the track was unbelievably racy. It was a fun race track to race on,” said Jacobs beside his Hammer Pallets, Berlin Bakery Classic Turning Products backed #24H.

At the drop of the green in the O’Reilly Auto Parts A-main, Mike Linder jumped into the lead with Stevie Smith, Blaney, Bill Rose and Gressman in tow. Linder would pull away until a Kevin Lee spin on lap three brought out the caution. Linder set sail on the ensuing with Blaney racing side-by-side with Smith for second, taking the position on lap four. Blaney caught Linder on lap 8 and raced to his outside in turns 3 and 4 to take the lead a lap later with Gressman getting by Smith for third.

While Blaney pulled away, Linder and Gressman battled for second while Rose and Smith raced each other tough for the fourth spot. Blaney hit lapped traffic by lap 13, but Gressman, who drove around Linder on lap 12 for second, could not close. By the half-way point, Blaney had a straight-away advantage over Gressman with Linder, Rose, Jacobs and Smith following. Rose would dispose of Linder on lap 17 for the third spot and closed in on Gressman. With Blaney picking his way through traffic, Gressman and Rose would swap the runner-up spot in every turn. Meanwhile hometown favorite Greg Wilson had marched his way forward from his 16th starting spot and moved into sixth by lap 20.

With five laps to go, Smith and Linder made contact with Linder coming to a stop exiting turn four for the second caution of the race. On the ensuing restart, Blaney had four lapped machines between himself and second place running Gressman, allowing him to pull away to a comfortable lead with a clear track. Jacobs would drive around Rose into third on lap 26, but could not close on Gressman as he battled lapped cars. Brandon Martin and Cap Henry would stop on lap 28 with flat tires, necessitating a green, white, checkered finish.

This time Blaney had two lapped machines between himself and Gressman and he once again pulled away for the victory.

During the evening, the drivers went through the stands and collected $3,860 from the very generous fans for injured sprint driver Danny Smith. Smith broke his back in a horrific crash at Attica Raceway Park on Friday and was scheduled for surgery Monday morning.

Shaffer dominates All Star's Ohio Sprint Speedweek stop at KC Raceway

Tim ShafferCHILLICOTHE, OHIO - (6-19-10) - By Brian Liskai - Aliquippa, Pennsylvania’s Tim Shaffer put on a sprint car driving clinic Saturday at KC Raceway on night #2 of the Ohio Sprint Speedweek. The defending champion and current point leader of the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions dominated the 30 lap feature. And, unlike the previous night when he ran out of fuel while leading, he had such a commanding lead Saturday, he could have coasted around the track to victory lane.

Shaffer and former KC Raceway champion Todd Kane paced the field to the green. On the initial start Kyle Sauder got sideways in front of the field, causing Tyler Walker and Mitch Harble to collide, ending their night while Sauder never stopped. Shaffer blasted into the lead in his Aaron Call, Janet Holbrook owned machine on the restart, quickly building a sizeable lead. Four-time Ohio Speedweek champion Dale Blaney and Kane would grapple for second, with Blaney utilizing the low line to take the spot by lap 7.

Ron Blair clipped the front stretch wall on lap 11 but was able to continue as other drivers took evasive action. By this time, Shaffer had nine lapped machines separating him from Blaney, who was now having to contend with Brandon Wimmer for the runner-up spot. The two swapped the position lap after lap, with Wimmer driving Rick Ferkel’s #0 into second with a slide job on lap 17.

The first caution would fly on lap 23 when Cale Conley made contact with another car, spinning on the front stretch, with former KC champion Keith Baxter also stopping exiting turn four. The large crowd’s eyes were glued to former KC owner Jim Neir, who started back in the 24th position, and had worked his way up to 9th.On the restart, Shaffer had five lapped machines between himself and Wimmer. The “Steel City Outlaw” used the clean air to pull away to another commanding lead. Meanwhile, Wimmer and Blaney continued their torrid battle, with Blaney executing a slide job on lap 27 for second, while Neir continued to march forward.

Shaffer would drive away to his second All Star win of 2010 with Blaney taking second, Wimmer third, Sauder fourth and David Gravel fifth. Neir would end up sixth in the final run-down.

“This is the first time I’ve won here…it’s awesome. I had such a great car…I couldn’t let the guys down with starting on the pole. We’ve been having some tough times, but this really helps out. It’s awesome to be in victory lane with family here,” said Shaffer beside his Technique Roofing, Kistler Engines, Kistler Racing Products backed #83. “With the wall around here, you hear an echo and it makes you think there’s a car close to you so I just ran it as hard as I could.

It marked Shaffer’s 21st career victory with the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions.

Blaney indicated after about four laps into the race he knew he was racing for second.

“The car was good the first four laps…this was my type of track, wide and slick, but for some reason we just weren’t very good anywhere on the track after that. We just missed the set-up. We didn’t have anything for Tim. Brandon (Wimmer) is just very good on a slick, smooth track so fortunately we were able to get the pass late for second,” said Blaney beside his Ti22 Performance backed #2.

Wimmer enjoyed his battle with Blaney for second.

“That was a blast. When I got by Dale I knew we were close to the front but Shaffer was just out of sight. Toward the end the car got a little loose, but this is a great run. Rick (Ferkel) and all the guys work so hard on this thing and I’m glad I could bring them a top three,” said Wimmer beside his Shorty’s Truck Repair, Smith’s Farm backed #0.

Byron Reed gets redemption, scores second All Star win at Attica to open Ohio Sprint Speedweek

Byron ReedATTICA, OH (6-18-10) By Brian Liskai –All Star Circuit of Champions- All looked lost for Byron Reed when he slid off the track while leading late in the race. But redemption was just around the corner for the Monclova, Ohio driver when leader Tim Shaffer ran out of fuel with five laps remaining, handing Reed the lead. He would go on to take the opening night of Ohio Sprint Speedweek at Attica Raceway Park Friday, his second O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions win at the track this season.

Reed was given the lead on lap 22 as he pressured Stevie Smith in lapped traffic and Smith spun in turn two. Reed pulled away on the restart, but a caution for Smith on lap 26 bunched up the field. Again Reed pulled away from All Star point leader Shaffer with Bryan Sebetto and Dale Blaney waging a tremendous battle for third. Disaster struck for Reed on lap 32 as he slipped off the high side of turn two, allowing Shaffer to drive under him for the lead.

A caution on lap 35 for a Brandon Martin spin in turn four was almost trouble for leader Shaffer, as he narrowly missed hitting him, squeezing between Martin and the front stretch guard rail. Sebetto’s great run would end on the next lap as he drove off turn three. During the caution, Shaffer and Blaney would stop after running out of fuel, necessitating a fuel stop and sending them to the tail.

All Star officials told the teams at the pre-race drivers’ meeting the rule is 40 laps or one hour from the time the first car pushes off. They indicated 14 minutes were still remaining before a fuel stop would be necessary and since Shaffer and Blaney stopped they would go to the tail.

That handed the lead back to Reed and he would drive away for his third Attica win of the season on Legends Sports Pub & Grille Night. Last week’s winner Mark Keegan, who drove into the rear of Reed’s car as the field stopped for the red flag fuel stop, damaging the front wing of his car, would come home second while 16th place starter Dean Jacobs would race into another third place finish.

Reed, a five-time Attica champion, now has 25 career victories at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant, good for second on the track’s all-time win list. It was his ninth career All Star victory as well.

“I made a mistake and thought it was over. I must have had a pretty good lead…when I came back on the track I was still in second. I knew Tim (Shaffer) was having fuel issues..I know I was close but I think I would have made it. This JEI chassis and Kistler engine is running great,” said Reed beside his Reebar Diecasting, Weld Wheels backed #5. “Isn’t this great…the two locals running first and second.”

For Keegan, the second place run means he’ll go to night #2 of the nine-night Ohio Sprint Speedweek at KC Raceway.

“I was looking up to see how many more laps were left and Byron stopped for the red and I hit him. I thought I was done, but they pushed me around and the crew said other than front wing it was okay. We nursed it home second. This is awesome for the local guys to beat a field like this,” said Keegan beside his Midwest Transportation, Jon Wright Custom Chrome Plating #X.

Jacobs has been a consistent top three finisher this season and is happy with the progress of his young team.

“I just keep getting a great race car…it’s been a blast to drive. We will get wins,” said Jacobs beside his Northwest Ohio Towing and Recovery, NAPA Truck and Auto Center backed #97. “These guys need to put bigger fuel tanks on. It’s their own fault they ran out of fuel. We put a 33-gallon tank on and had plenty of fuel. They know the rule and it bit them.”

After an opening lap red for a crash involving Brian Lay, Cole Duncan and David Gravel, Smith, the 2009 Ohio Speedweek champion bolted into the lead with Reed, Shaffer, Blaney and Sebetto in tow. Another red flag for a Cap Henry tip over which collected Brandon Wimmer after one lap was scored wiped out Smith’s lead. On the ensuing restart Smith began stretching out his lead with Reed and Shaffer comfortably in second and third while Blaney and Sebetto raced side by side for fourth.

Jody Keegan would drive off turn three on lap six while running sixth, to bring out a caution. Once again Smith pulled away with the lead on the restart with Reed, Shaffer, Blaney and Sebetto in tow. Sebetto would take fourth from Blaney on lap 11 and that’s the way the remained until a caution on lap 11 for Kevin Lee. Every time Smith would build a lead, the caution would fly as it did on lap 15 for Lee Jacobs who stopped on the track.

Smith set a torrid pace on the restart, catching the rear of the field just seven laps later, allowing Reed to close on his rear bumper. As the pair raced nose to tail into turns one and two trying to pick their way through traffic, Smith would spin, bringing out the caution and sending him to the tail. Now Reed led over Shaffer, Sebetto, Blaney and Keegan. The running order would remain that way until lap 26 when Smith would stop on the track for another caution. Reed pulled away on the restart while Shaffer ran comfortably in second with Sebetto and Blaney still racing hard for third.

On lap 32, Reed missed his marks in turn two, driving off the high side of the track, handing the lead to Shaffer, as Reed reentered the track in second. Then began the bizarre events on lap 35 when the caution flew for Brandon Martin, as Shaffer narrowly missed hitting him. On the restart Sebetto would drive off turn three and another caution would see the fuel issue come into play.

The 28th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek continues Saturday, June 19 at KC Raceway in Chillicothe Ohio before travelling to Millstream Speedway in Findlay on Sunday, June 20 for a Father’s Day All Star special.

Over a $241,000 up for grabs during 9 nights of Ohio Sprint Speedweek

CAMARGO, IL - (6-15-10) - By Brian Liskai - Ohio Sprint Speedweek has become a tradition unlike any others. Fans plan their vacations around the event and race teams spend months preparing for it. The 28th  Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek featuring the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars will feature nine straight nights of racing across the Buckeye State, paying out over $241,000 in prize money along the way.

Twenty-seven years ago, former Eldora Speedway owner Earl Baltes sat down with then All Star president Bert Emick to discuss the idea of a week-long series of races to highlight the great tracks and race teams who call Ohio home. Thus came about Ohio Sprint Speedweek. Now, other states and sanctioning bodies have copied the idea, but Ohio’s version remains one of the most anticipated events of the summer with average car counts in the mid 40s.

The first eight nights of Ohio Sprint Speedweek will pay the All Star sprint feature winner $5,000 with the final night at Fremont Speedway offering up a big $10,000 to win payday.

It all kicks off Friday, June 18 at Attica Raceway Park on Legend’s Sports Pub and Grille Night as the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Stars battle the tough weekly regulars at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant for the $5,000 top prize. The UMP late models will also be in action. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7:45 p.m. General admission tickets are $22 for adults; $20 for senior citizens; $10 for teens ages 11-15; with kids 10 and under admitted free. Pit passes will be $35. For more information go to www.atticaracewaypark.com

Saturday finds the All Stars returning to the high banks of KC Raceway near Chillicothe, Ohio, on Roosters/Miller Lite Night. It’s been several years since Ohio Sprint Speedweek has competed at the 3/8th mile oval. Joining the All Star sprints will be the NRA 360 Sprints, Advance Modifieds and hobby stocks. General admission tickets are $20 with kids ages 6-12 entering for $10. Pit passes will be $30. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m. with racing underway at 7:30 p.m. For more information go to www.kc-raceway.com.

Sunday, June 20 brings the All Stars back to the half-mile of Millstream Speedway near Findlay, Ohio. The track roared back to life in 2008 after having sat idle for nearly nine years. The Speedweek show will be the first of 2010 for the track. Last year’s Ohio Sprint Speedweek show at Millstream drew the highest car count as over 60 sprints jammed the pits. Joining the All Star sprints will be the UMP modifieds. Gates will open at 3 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for senior citizens; $10 for kids ages 11-16 with kids 10 and under free. Pit passes will be $30. For more information go to www.millstreamspeedway.com.

On Monday, the rabid fans of Wayne County Speedway will pack the stands for night #4 of Ohio Sprint Speedway. A part of Speedweek since its inception, the three-eighths mile oval located near Orrville, also draws a pretty good contingent of Pennsylvania drivers. The modifieds will also be in action. Gates will open at 3 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m. For more information go to www.waynecountyspeedway.com

Tuesday finds the All Star sprints at Hilltop Speedway near Millersburg, Ohio. The one-third mile high banks offer plenty of racing room “on the hill.” The modifieds will also be in action. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing underway around 7 p.m. General admission tickets are $20 for adults; $10 for teens ages 6-12; Pit passes will be $35.  For more information go to www.hilltopspeedway.org.

From one bullring to another, as the night #6 of Ohio Sprint Speedweek heads to Waynesfield Motorsports Park near Waynesfield, Ohio on Wednesday, June 23. The high-banked third-mile has produced some of the closest finishes in Speedweek history. Joining the All Star sprints will be the compacts and four-cylinder Tough Trucks. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. with grandstand gates opening at 5 p.m. Racing will get underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults; $6 for kids ages 11-15 with kids 10 and under free. Pit passes are $30. For directions and more information go to www.waynesfieldmotorsportspark.com

On Thursday, June 24, the All Stars had to Sharon Speedway. It’s been several years since the All Star competed at three-eighths mile high banked clay oval located near Hartford, Ohio. Several Pennsylvania teams will no-doubt head to Sharon to battle the All Stars. The limited sprints will also be in competition. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults; $5 for kids ages 9-13. Pit passes are $25. For more information log onto www.sharonspeedway.com

Night #8 finds the all stars at the high banks of Limaland Motorsports Park on Elwer Fence Night. Again, the nature of the track – a quarter mile, wide, high-banked dirt oval – guarantees tight, close racing action. The UMP modifieds will also be in action. The pit gates will open at 3 p.m. with grandstands gates opening at 4 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults; $11 for kids ages 11-15.

Speedweek wraps up at the historic Fremont Speedway with a big $10,000 to win event on Budweiser Night. The nonwing 305 sprints will also be in action. It will be the 92nd appearance of the All Stars in the 59-year history of “The Track That Action Built.” The tough weekly competitor will give the All Star travelers all they can handle. In fact, the last All Star appearance, young local racer Bryan Sebetto held off defending All Star champ Tim Shaffer to score the win. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults; $20 for senior citizens; $15 for kids 11-15 with kids 10 and under free. Pit passes will be $30. For more information go to www.fremontohspeedway.com

Another interesting twist to the Ohio Sprint Speedweek is the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series is offering a $1,000 cash bonus to any FAST series driver who can take the Speedweek title. A $500 bonus is being offered to the highest finishing FAST driver in the week’s final point standings. FAST is an 22-race series -11 shows at Fremont Speedway and 11 at Attica Raceway Park – that awards a separate point fund from that of the two weekly tracks.

Fremont Speedway Promoter Rich Farmer and Attica Raceway Park Promoter John Bores are putting up the cash for the bonus as a reward for the support these teams have shown their tracks this season. This will, of course, help insure bigger car counts at the other tracks participating in Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

“I think the FAST series has been great for our local drivers and we want to see these teams support Ohio Speedweek and compete with the drivers from other areas around Ohio as well as give the All Stars a run for the money each night,” said Farmer. “Ohio Speedweek has always been one of the biggest weeks of sprint car racing in the State of Ohio and we would like to see these guys take it seriously and go compete each night and show the fans across the state what we get to see each weekend at Attica and Fremont.”

Drivers eligible for the cash bonus include Byron Reed, who beat the All Stars earlier this year at Attica; Brock Mayes, Mark Keegan, Phil Gressman, Craig mintz, Kevin Lee, Chris Andrews, Jody Keegan, Bryan Sebetto, Brandon Martin, David Harrison, Todd Heller, Mike Linder, Brian Smith, Shawn Valenti and Duane Zablocki.

The roster of drivers expected to compete during Ohio Sprint Speedweek will include defending and current All Star point leader Tim Shaffer; two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson; 2009 speedweek champion Stevie Smith; four-time Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion Dale Blaney; Pennsylvania Posse members Lance Dewease, Fred Rahmer and possibly Brian Leppo, Brian Monteith, Greg Hodnett and others; and young guns like Cap Henry, Jared Ridge, David Gravel, Jessica Zemken and more. When they come up against some of the strongest weekly 410 sprint drivers in the nation, just making the A-main will be a challenge.

Last year nearly 100 different drivers competed during Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

“Besides the purse money, we’re paying nearly $28,000 in appearance money this week which should contribute to very strong car counts. Ohio Sprint Speedweek is an event unlike any other. Ohio is among the elite 410 sprint states in the country, producing some of the best drivers and teams you’ll find any where,” said Guy Webb, President of the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Stars. “Speedweek will test the drivers and crews and will have a lot to say about who win the All Star title and the $50,000 at the end of the year.”

Big Diamond Raceway Postponed

Image Minersville, PA (6-13-10)- As cars attempted to put heat in the motors at Big Diamond Raceway on Sunday, June 14, rain began to fall for the third time, causing the show to be rescheduled. The reschedule date will be announced in the coming days, so be sure to stay tuned to www.allstarsprint.com for further information.

Brian Montieth wins at Lincoln Speedway
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA -(6-12-10)- By Brian Liskai- Brian Montieth knows every inch of Lincoln Speedway and he used that knowledge to hold of Brian Leppo to take Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions victory.

Montieth, who started third, passed outside front row starter and race-long leader Leppo on the back stretch of lap 10 while navigating through lapped traffic. Leppo, who missed out on an All Star victory Friday night at Williams Grove by less than an inch, had two more shots at Montieth following late race cautions, but couldn’t secure the pass and again ran runner-up, this time by 1.07 seconds. It was Montieth’s second win of the season at the Pigeon Hills oval, which also helped boost his current point lead over 10-time track champ Fred Rahmer as he looks for his third championship in a row.

“This Triple X chassis has been working. Scotty, Todd and the boys have this thing great…when I turn it goes,” said Montieth. “The track was a little greasy there in the beginning. I was sort of afraid the track would dry off, but I think the track’s actually decent.”

A three hour rain delay pushed the start of the A-main to 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Earlier in the evening, 27 cars had taken qualifying laps when the rains came, forcing the All Star officials to rerun time trials after a lengthy delay.

Bellevue, Ohio’s Cap Henry, who currently leads the All Star Rookie of the Year points, started on the pole of the feature. Going into turn one on the start, Henry got high, nearly losing control, but quickly regained his composure, falling to sixth. On lap two Doug Esh, Tim Shaffer and Jim Siegel spun in turns one and two, bringing out the caution. On the restart, Leppo would lead Montieth, Rahmer, Aaron Ott and Friday’s All Star winner Daryn Pittman. Leppo would set a torrid pace, hitting lapped traffic by the sixth circuit. Montieth would use that to his advantage, racing into the lead on lap 10.

Montieth could not shake Leppo as Rahmer, Ott and Pittman also closed. A lap 22 caution gave Montieth a clear track with Leppo on his tail. Two lapped machines separated second and third place Rahmer. Two laps later the action would grind to a half when sixth place runner Alan Krimes flipped in turn three. On the restart Montieth and Leppo drove away while Rahmer and Ott waging a tremendous battle for third.

Montieth would race under the checkered for his 18th career Lincoln Speedway victory. Leppo, Rahmer, Ott and Pittman would round out the top five.

Smith edges Leppo for Williams Grove All Star win
ImageMECHANICSBURG, PA. -(6-11-10)- By Brian Liskai- All Star Circuit of Champions-  Who won? That was the question the big crowd and the drivers were asking at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, June 11. Timing and scoring showed Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Stevie Smith beat his brother-in-law Brian Leppo by .002 seconds for his 16th career O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars victory.

“It’s a great night to win,” said Smith, the 2009 All Star Ohio Sprint Speedweek Champion. “Brian deserves a lot of credit. When you’re leading, you’re trying not to give it away. It’s an advantage for the second place car. I had nothing to lose.”

The feature got off to a wicked start when Donnie Kreitz’s car slowed coming off turn two on the first lap, causing oncoming cars to make contact. Rick Lafferty and Tyler Walker were flip victims and several others were involved. No injuries were reported.

Leppo, of New Oxford, Pa., grabbed the early lead over Chad Layton. The battle for third was on between Smith, Alan Krimes and Brian Montieth, who started 10th. A caution on lap five slowed the pace.

Leppo, who has Steve Smith Sr. as his mechanic, checked out on the field after the restart as Montieth drove by Krimes and into fourth. Montieth and Smith traded sliders in the first and second turns on lap 11 with Smith maintaining third.

Leppo closed on slower traffic on lap 15, and tried to put a lap on All Star charger David Gravel in turn two, but lost momentum allowing Layton, Smith and Montieth to close. Three lapped machines were battling in front of Leppo with 13 laps to go, and just as the race for the lead was about to get interesting, the caution flew for Doug Esh’s slowing machine.

Smith, a former Pennsylvania resident, began closing on Leppo with five laps remaining. Leppo caught Gravel again and followed him for a lap before trying to move low in turn three to put him a lap down. Again Leppo lost his momentum and Smith pounced, using a slider in the first turn to take the lead. Leppo would not give up without a fight, shooting under Smith in turn three. Smith turned back under Leppo as they both mashed the gas to the floor exiting turn four. They were side-by-side as they raced down the front stretch for the checkered flag.

Smith was the winner by inches over Leppo, Montieth, Daryn Pittman – who took the All Star win Thursday in New York – and Fred Rahmer. Rounding out the top 10 were Greg Hodnett, Chad Layton, Lance Dewease and defending All Star champion and current point leader Tim Shaffer.

“I was going to go the opposite direction,” Smith said beside his Zemco Headers, Maxim Racing backed #1. “I got to his bumper and was able to try a slider. We had just enough momentum to keep in front of him.

“It’s hard to swallow because you lead that many laps,” said a dejected Leppo. “I’ve been racing long enough to make better decisions.”

Pittman out duels Walker for Fonda All Star victory
ImageFONDA, N.Y. - (6-10-10)- By Brian Liskai- All Star Circuit of Champions- Look out…Daryn Pittman is getting very comfortable in his Lelands.com, Mike Heffner owned #27! The Owasso, Ok. native used lapped traffic to pass California’s Tyler Walker and went on to claim the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions victory at Fonda Speedway Thursday night. It was a make-up race, as Wednesday’s event at Fonda was rained out.

The fans were treated to a classic duel from the two experienced drivers as they sliced and diced for the lead while negotiating lapped traffic. And, to make it more interesting, Pittman was chasing the car he had formerly driven with Walker now behind the wheel.

Jessica Zemken, a New York native who has been on a hot streak of late, winning ESS races in the northeast region including Fonda and recording a second place run with the All Stars in Canada a few nights ago, raced into the 30-lap feature lead from her pole starting position. Zemken set a blistering pace with Walker right on her heels. On lap 7 Walker split a lapped car and Zemken to take the lead. A lap later and defending All Star champion Tim Shaffer looped it out coming out of turn 2 to bring out the only caution of the race.

Walker used the clean track to pull away slightly, but his fast car quickly caught lapped traffic again, allowing Pittman to close. Pittman was able to follow Walker, waiting for his opportunity. He used lapped machines to his advantage to pass Walker and went on to his second career All Star victory.

“When I get behind that #17 car it gives me even more incentive to win. Lapped traffic definitely came into play. When I was in second I had an advantage because Tyler was trying some things and I got to see what he was doing,” said Pittman beside his Lelands.com, Pasquariello’s Auto Shop, Scrub A Dub Performance Car Wash backed #27.

“The fans were the real winners tonight…that was a heck of a race. When two guys can go at it like that, racing hard in and out of lapped traffic without touching…that is great and I’m glad to be the one who was able to come out on top,” added Pittman, who now calls Pittsboro, Indiana home.

For Los Angeles, California native Walker, his second place run is encouraging for a team that is beginning to gel.

“I’m not really disappointed with second. I got beat fair and square. But, this team is getting it turned around and if we keep working hard the wins will come,” said Walker beside his Peterbuilt, Hunter Truck Sales, Keen Motorsports #17. “We made some wrong guesses with the set-up tonight and sometimes you come out a winner and sometimes you come out a loser.”

Zemken, clearly the fan-favorite in the race, said her third placed finish was a learning experience.

“I got beat by two awesome race drivers tonight. Following them is a great way for me to learn and that’s the only way I’m going to get better. That is my goal…to keep running with them and just keep learning,” said Zemken beside her Tony Stewart Racing, Corr/Pak Merchandise, Eldora Speedway backed #14.

The All Stars kick off a big three-race weekend in Pennsylvania tonight at the historic Williamsgrove Speedway followed by a trip to Lincoln Speedway and wrapping up at Big Diamond Raceway on Sunday.

Shaffer scores first All Star win of 2010 in Canada

GRANDBY, QUEBEC, CANADA (6-7-10) – By Brian Liskai – Tim Shaffer picked up his first O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions feature win of 2010 Monday nightAutodrome-Grandby 2010 at Autodrome Grandby Speedway, passing Jessica Zemken on a lap 14 and held off the young lady on several restarts for his 20th career All Star victory in front of a packed grandstands.

In the last three All Star events, Shaffer, the defending series champion and current point leader, has now recorded a win and a pair of runner-up finishes.

Twenty-two cars made the trip to Quebec, Canada, for the first ever appearance of the All Stars at the half-mile track. Following a day of travel, the All Stars will compete at Fonda Speedway in New York on Wednesday.

Monday’s 30-lap feature kicked off with Connecticut’s David Gravel racing into a commanding lead. However, disaster struck for the young Gravel on the second lap, as he got upside down in turn two. On the restart, Zemken, who won an Empire Super Sprints (ESS) feature at Grandby just this past Friday, raced out front. A caution on lap 14 for Daniel Lampron slowed on the back stretch, bringing out the caution. All Star Rookie of the Year point leader Cap Henry also stopped on the back stretch during the yellow flag.

On the restart Shaffer, “The Steel City Outlaw,”  blasted around Zemken in his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook Motorsports machine to take the lead. A caution with eight laps remaining for Andrew Ranger would bunch up the field, but Shaffer’s Kistler Engine was too strong as he pulled away from Zemken again. The young lady from Sprakers, New York, who took an ESS victory just Sunday at Utica-Rome Speedway her home state, would have one more shot at Shaffer as All Star Rookie of the Year candidate Jared Ridge slowed just past the flag stand with five laps to go, bringing out the caution.

Again on the restart Shaffer was just too strong, pulling away. Just as Shaffer was coming to the checkered flag, Jeff Taylor flipped right in front of the leader, causing heavy damage to the fence on the inside wall – Taylor walked away uninjured.

Following Shaffer across the line was Zemken, Pennsylvanian Aaron Ott, two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson and young Danny Holtgraver who has now scored two straight top five finishes with the All Stars.

“That was a very fast, tricky race track. You had to pick your line carefully every lap,” said Shaffer beside his Kistler Racing Products, Technique Roofing backed #83. “It’s great to get that first All Star win…we’ve been so close. Brian (Kemenah, chief mechanic) has had the car great all year…the driver just finally got his head out of his butt and drove it hard. We got some breaks to go our way tonight…everything fell into place.”

Pennsylvania Posse member Fred Rahmer made the trip north, but scratched out of the A-main after flipping in his heat.
